Lviv Region Fuel and Energy Department on the construction of small HPPs

Balford Ukraine LLC is publishing the response of the Department of Fuel and Energy Complex, Energy Efficiency and Housing and Communal Services of the Lviv Regional State Administration to an inquiry from the company’s Director General, Dmytro Nikulin (letter dated 16 December 2024 No. 0.1), regarding the construction of small hydropower plants.

The Department notes that the updated Development Strategy of Lviv Region for 2021–2027 includes the operational goal “Energy security and self-sufficiency of the region,” one of whose tasks is to increase the use of distributed generation and develop renewable energy. In the action plan for implementing the Strategy for 2024–2027, among the key measures under the technical assignment “Development of renewable energy,” the construction of highly flexible balancing small HPP capacity in the mountain areas of Lviv Region is listed.

In light of this, the regional military administration is interested in developing small hydropower and attracting investment for the construction of hydropower plants in Lviv Region. At the same time, the letter stresses that the introduction and operation of small hydropower facilities are possible only if modern environmentally friendly technologies are used, in order to preserve the biological diversity of the flora and fauna of the region’s rivers.

The letter is signed by the Department Director, Bohdan Keivan.
